Vietnamese New Year is the biggest celebration of the year. It is the Lunar New Year and is celebrated at the same time as Chinese New Year, Korean New Year, etc. People usually gather with their families, decorate their houses, have dinner, exchange “lucky money” and travel. There are also many fireworks and other traditions. Many people go to the temple to pray for good luck in the New Year.
Vietnam is very known for its noodles. There are different kinds of noodles. The most famous ones are Phở (rice noodles) and Bún (egg noodles). Both of them can be served in soup or not although Phở are mostly served in soups and Bún are often served without soup. You can eat them with many different things, like vegetables and meat.
There are also many rice dishes that you can find in Vietnam. Usually, they are served with vegetables and sometimes also with meat.
Spring rolls and Phở Cuốn are also very typical in Vietnam. Phở Cuốn are fresh spring rolls meanwhile nem are fried spring rolls. Inside you can always find vegetables or meat.
Bún Bò Nam Bộ and bún bò huế are one of my favorite dishes in Vietnam. I don’t like meat so much, but for this one, I make an exception. It is made from bún (noodles), vegetables, peanuts, and meat.
Bún chả is also an amazing dish. It is made with bún (noodles), vegetables, and pork meat. Be very careful where you get it. I usually don’t eat pork meat but there was one shop near my house in Vietnam that made the best Bún chả in Hanoi so for this, I made an exception once in a while.
Bánh Mì is a typical Vietnamese baguette with egg or other ingredients. Usually, people eat it in the evenings.
In the streets, you can always find people selling round sweets. They are filled with some kind of bean paste (a little sweet). I love them! I just don’t know their name.
Vietnam is one of the biggest coffee producers on earth and therefore has one of the best coffees on earth. You should definitely try drinking traditional Vietnamese Coffee which is prepared with some special equipment. I like to drink milk coffee – in Vietnam, they will use sweet condensed and black coffee as milk coffee. I like it very much. There is also special egg coffee from Hanoi which is super tasty!
