A Longyi (လုံချည်) is a traditional Burmese skirt. It’s used by women and
men. It comes in all colors and with all types of prints for women. For men, it usually has a plaid motif. Women usually combine it with a suitable upper part, called Engyi. Longyi and Engyi
together are called Longyi Set.
To buy a Longyi or a Longyi Set (Longyi + Engyi) you have two
options:
-
You can buy it “ready-made”: especially in tourist markets but also in
some shops they sell it in different sizes and colors. The price is around 5.000 Kyat (3$).
-
You can choose the material and go to a sewer who will make it for you
with your own measurements. The cost for this depends on the sewer fee and the material fee. For a simple Longyi Set, it should be 15.000-20.000 Kyat (10-12$) for the sewer and 15.000 Kyat
(10$) for the material. If the material is more exclusive, it will be more expensive. If you want to buy only the skirt you will usually pay 5.000 Kyat (3$) for the material and 5.000 Kyat
(3$) for the sewer.
I recommend two places for making your own Longyi (Set) in Yangon:
-
next to the Dagon Center in Sanchaung you can find a small center full
of fabrics and sewers. It’s an amazing place with a lot of materials. The first time you should go with a local, as you can be overwhelmed by the large selection of fabrics.
-
the Spirits Store (very close to the Dagon Center): here you can find
fabrics downstairs and sewers upstairs. The advantage is that the material for the bottom part and the top part are already combined, so you don’t have to search and combine it
yourself.
P.S.: All other ethnicities of Myanmar (Kachin, Karen, Shan, Chin, Mon,
Rakhine, etc.) have their own traditional clothes. Next time I visit the country I want to get some of these!
